Irish moss (Chondrus Crispus) is common in the intertidal zone on all shores of the North Atlantic. Historically, Chondrus Crispus has been used internally as an excellent remedy for tuberculosis, coughs, bronchitis, and intestinal problems.
Chondrus Crispus was considered an excellent wound dressing when used as a poultice since Irish moss holds the earth's nutrients in which it was grown. Its practical emollient qualities enabled it to be used successfully for skin preparations, especially those designed to alleviate dryness and wrinkling.
Because of its mucilaginous content, Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) has also been used as an emulsifying and suspending agent in pharmaceutical preparations. Irish moss is also a high-nutrient food source.
Because of its demulcent and emollient qualities, Carrageenan is an excellent lubricating ingredient in skin preparations designed for irritated, dry, or aging skin. Chondrus Crispus is excellent in anti-wrinkle preparations.Carrageenan is also suitable for products designed for dry hair and scalp.
