Mineral oil

Mineral oil is a mixture of refined hydrocarbons derived from petroleum (crude oil) that is used industrially as a cutting fluid and lubricating oil. It is known as liquid paraffin (Paraffinum liquidum or Paraffin oil).

Paraffinum liquidum adds a protective shiny layer or occlusive film. It is highly stable, does not penetrate, and forms an oily film over the skin to lock in moisture but hinders normal skin respiration by keeping oxygen out. Mineral oil is often seen in cheap products such as baby oil, lotion, and creams.

Mineral oil has also been used for constipation and cleaning out ear wax. Our editorial team does not recommend using products with petroleum direct derivatives including Paraffinum liquidum.
