Cotton

The cotton plant Gossypium Herbaceum belongs to the Malvaceae family and is known as"  nature's food and fiber plant." Analysis of cotton fibers found in an archaeological survey of India showed that they were produced as early as 3000 BC.

Early Hindu medical books documented the crushing of cottonseeds for oil. The oil was extracted from the cottonseeds and used as a topical medicine. The cottonseeds were pounded and then boiled to extract the oil.

However, large-scale production probably dates from the end of the eighteenth century. Cottonseed oil is currently ranked fifth in the world's production of edible oils.
