Goldenseal

Historically, Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis) was used for its strong antiseptic qualities, and it was also ingested for a variety of ailments. Topically, it was used to treat eczema and other skin irritations, as well as eye inflammations.

Applied to the arms and legs, Goldenseal has been found to be an effective treatment for disorders of the blood vessels and lymphatics. The active constituent, Berberine, makes it an effective agent against bacteria.

The American Indians used Goldenseal as a healing agent and insect repellent. They also used the juice from the root to stain their faces to prevent them from being regarded as "red men."

Goldenseal has been used on wounds to encourage scab formation and treat skin diseases, acne, eczema, and ringworm. Hydrastis Canadensis can be used in skin creams and lotions for its soothing action, as well as in products created for the delicate eye area. It can also be used in cleansers, toners, astringents, and deodorants to fight bacteria.
