Ceratonia Siliqua (Locust Bean) Gum is a highly purified fraction of branched galactomannan saccharide polymers with a mannose-to-galactose ratio of 4:1. It is derived from the seeds of the legume tree Ceratonia siliqua. Its aqueous solution is a clear to slightly opalescent, colorless, viscous liquid known under the trade name Phytaluronate®.
Ceratonia Siliqua Gum requires heating to 180°F for complete hydration and may be used as a partial replacer for cook-up starches. It is recommended for products that require suspension of particulate matter while hot and, like guar gum, has good water-binding properties.
Locust Bean Gum also exhibits synergy with xanthan gum and k-carrageenan. If lower viscosity before heating is desired to facilitate processing conditions, it is the gum of choice due to its limited solubility, hence lower viscosity, in cold water. After heating, the finished product will thicken upon cooling to ambient temperature.
In finished skin care formulations, Ceratonia Siliqua Gum provides exceptional lubricity, luxurious slip, and a remarkable after-feel to the skin. Its non-ionic specialty has characteristics and aesthetic qualities similar to hyaluronic acid.
