Saccharomyces/Zinc Ferment is a biotechnological ingredient derived from the fermentation of living yeast cells in a zinc ion-containing medium. It is a mineral-glycopeptides complex known under the trade name the Acqua-Biomin® Zinc Y3.
Zinc is an essential microelement that plays a crucial role as a cofactor of multiple enzymes involved in numerous vital processes in the skin and body. Enzymes like DNA and RNA polymerases contain zinc in the active part to initiate protein production. Other zinc-containing enzymes maintain the skin's optimal hydration, repair the extracellular matrix, and eliminate carbonic acid (carbon dioxide).
Zinc deficiency may cause prolonged wound healing, stretch marks, white spots on the nails, and susceptibility to infections. "Zinc fingers" have been identified as a critical component of many hydrophobic hormones, where they help stabilize the biomembrane structures and cell membrane metabolism.
Saccharomyces/Zinc Ferment is a bioavailable source of zinc ions. It promotes dermal cell activity and turnover, fights against free radicals, and prevents deficiency-related syndromes. It is thought that zinc complexes into the folded protein structures by combining hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces provide rigidity to these biological structures. Zinc also plays an important structural role in the superoxide dismutase enzyme, an essential cellular antioxidant part of the cell's natural defense system.
