The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis, and this structure is made up of corneocytes and several classes of lipids. This powerful composition, as well as the organization of these lipids in the extracellular space, is responsible for the chemical and physical barrier function of the skin, which keeps the body safe against the entry of harmful agents present in the environment.

In addition, it prevents transdermal water loss, preventing skin dryness. Changes in the composition of these lipids are identified in severe skin disorders, which affect the barrier function, allowing the penetration of irritating agents, allergens, and pathogens that cause irritation and inflammation, as well as an increase in transepidermal water loss.

It has also long been known that the use of emollients on the skin helps repair and protect the stratum corneum, which is important for the care and maintenance of skin health. Oat (Avena Sativa) is a cereal with the highest concentration of lipids, therefore Avena Sativa Kernel Oil is a powerful emollient that provides comfort, softness, and hydration to the skin.

Avena Sativa Kernel Oil is an organic oat oil extracted through an exclusive process, which guarantees obtaining a golden oil of high clarity and lightness. It is rich in phospholipids, antioxidants, and saponins, as well as a considerable amount of avenanthramides and vitamin E in the form of tocotrienols and tocopherols.

Although all types of lipids are present, Avena Sativa Kernel Oil has a vast amount of lipids similar to those found in the skin, such as triglycerides, free fatty acids, glycolipids, sterols, and esters. Among the total free fatty acids present are palmitic, oleic, stearic, and linoleic acids and, unlike others, it has high concentrations of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid in maintaining the permeability of the corneal extract.

Avenanthramides in Avena Sativa Kernel Oil exhibit an anti-irritating effect on the skin, reducing itching and redness.  Vitamin E in the form of α-tocopherol and α-tocotrienol, acts as a potent antioxidant, inhibiting the lipid peroxidation caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays. Avenancins, saponins present only in oats, provide an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and immunoregulatory action.
