Hydrogenated vegetable oil is a standard lauric hard butter derived from palm kernel oil that is hydrogenated, refined, and deodorized.
During hydrogenation, unsaturated fatty acids convert to saturated and double bonds between carbon atoms become single bonds when hydrogen atoms connect to that site of the molecule. This makes the vegetable oil thicker like butter.
Hydrogenated vegetable oil is primarily used as a replacement for relatively expensive cocoa butter in cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications where its texture and narrow melting range characteristics are essential.
