Squalane

Even if the name indicates an animal source (from shark, in Latin squalus), the best cosmetic Squalane is nowadays extracted from plants (unsaponifiable matter of olive oil, mainly) in respect to the availability and extraction of the substance as well as the tightened animal protection laws.

Squalane is one of the major components (10%) of human sebum. It is highly affine for human skin, has good skin tolerance (up to 20%), and has moisturizing and softening properties. It is also used to improve the spreading of emulsions that impart a soft, silky, velvety feel to the skin. It is easily absorbed and smooths the skin without a greasy feel.

Squalane prevents moisture loss and makes the skin soft and supple. It also has an anti-oxidant effect (fights free radicals) and prevents oxidative stress and premature skin aging. It is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid easily incorporated into formulations at normal manufacturing temperatures.

Protects, rejuvenates, and hydrates the skin. It provides essential nutrients and greatly benefits the health and beauty of the skin. In addition, squalene can iron up wrinkles and fine lines. Its excellent compatibility with cosmetic ingredients makes it ideal for various skincare and personal hygiene applications. Squalane is derived from olive oil and is a high-purity, natural, renewable resource.

Vegetable squalane consists of three saturated terpene units, the natural building block of most essential oils in plants. It contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms. Squalane is soluble and miscible with mineral, vegetable, and non-polar solvents.

Squalane is stable over a wide temperature range, helping to maintain product integrity. It solidifies at -38°C, making it particularly useful for retaining the quality of emulsions at low temperatures.

Being a biomimetic skin lipid, it imparts a natural emollience to the skin. It also has an affinity with the skin and contributes to its protective barrier.

Squalane is present in natural sebum, particularly in healthy young skin. Vegetable squalane can balance the decline of sebum production with aging. Vegetable squalane is readily emulsified and results in glossy emulsions.

Squalane's distinct sensorial properties can be perceived in a formulation, even at low concentrations. This makes it a highly attractive skin care ingredient that can help maintain a youthful appearance.
