Cetyl Esters

Cetyl Esters (esters of a C14 alcohol with C16 - C18 acids) are waxy solids or flakes with melting points near body temperature (43 - 47°C). It is an emollient ester that provides lubricity, a body, and a soft glossy feel.

Cetyl Esters offer increased emulsion viscosity as well as improved stability. This ingredient can even be used as a co-emulsifier. It is an excellent ingredient for lotions, creams, scrubs, body butter, and conditioners.

What is it? Synthetic Spermaceti Wax. Sperm Wales have a reservoir of waxy liquid in their heads that helps them to echolocate (find their way around the ocean using sound). Whalers thought the wax was the whale's sperm. That is why it is called 'Spermacetti'. Spermacetti Wax was used in candles, ointments, and cosmetics.

Today the friendlier synthetic version is available. This is one of those products where the synthetic is better to use than the natural. This versatile ingredient is used in skincare, hair care, soap, and decorative cosmetics. Cetyl Esters's usage rate is 3 to 10%.
