Heptylparaben is a white crystalline powder or colorless crystal and is a longer alkyl ester of p-hydroxybenzoic acid. It is practically insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, and propylene glycol.

Besides the same benefits as their lower alkyl counterparts in low toxicity, excellent stability overheat/broad pH range, and compatibility with other ingredients, the most prominent property of Heptylparaben is its much higher and broader antimicrobial activity against yeasts, molds, and bacteria at very low dosage. This advantage will help the formulators to achieve confidently the goal of "Preserve More with Less".

Heptylparaben has been granted GRAS status and approved by the FDA for inhibiting microbiological spoilage in beer, wine, fermented malt beverages, noncarbonated soft drinks, and fruit-based beverages. Challenge tests show it can be used as a preservative and antimicrobial agent in a wide range of skincare, hair care, and oral care products to replace or reduce the dosage of common parabens.
