The genus name viola is derived from the Greek word for 'lone.' Legend has it that when Jupiter changed his beloved into a white heifer for fear of Juno's jealousy, he caused these flowers to spring forth from the earth as a fitting food for her and gave them her name.

Sweet Violet (Viola Odorata) was used by the Athenians to moderate anger, procure sleep, and comfort and strengthen the heart. It has also been used to treat epilepsy, inflammations of the eye, insomnia, pleurisy, and jaundice.

Sweet Violet is considered to have cooling, antiseptic, expectorant, and mildly laxative properties.

Viola Odorata Flower/Leaf Extract is a light to medium amber liquid with a characteristic odor. Sweet Violet extract is used in skin creams, lotions, toners, gels, and bath and eye care products.
