PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate is a coconut oil fatty acid ester of sorbitol, and its mono- and dianhydrides are copolymerized with approximately 80 moles of ethylene oxide. It is prepared as a 72% solution in water, which is a clear liquid with a HLB of 19.4.

PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate is an oil-in-water emulsifier and stabilizer for lotions and creams. It is a nonirritating nonionic surfactant that can provide anti-irritation benefits to mixed surfactant systems. This anti-irritant behavior can actually reduce a formulation's irritation potential, making it an excellent co-surfactant for applications where mildness is crucial, such as baby baths and baby shampoos.

It is compatible with anionic and cationic surfactants, making PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate especially suitable for combination shampoo/conditioner products. It can also provide fragrance solubilization and viscosity control at levels of 0.5 - 3%.

PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate is used in shampoos where mildness is a crucial factor. It contributes to wetting properties and is particularly effective when used with PEG-150 Distearate to increase viscosity and body in shampoos.
