Polyquaternium-59 is an amber liquid with a characteristic odor. It is an active, EINECS-exempt, polyester polyquaternized UV absorber for hair. Studies on both pigmented and gray hair showed that it is effective in preventing UV-B damage and, in doing so, protects UV-exposed hair from protein degradation and a loss in integrity.
Polyquaternium-59 improves hair combing, restores hydrophobicity, and preserves tensile strength. In addition, it enhances the appearance of colored hair, which looks like its natural color. Compatible with surfactants and anionic ingredients, it is soluble in water, Propylene, and IPA and insoluble in mineral oils.
Polyquaternium-59 prevents UV-B (at 280nm) induced photo-yellowing in gray hair and protects against UV damage in relaxed ethnic hair. In one study, color indexes (L*, a*, b*) were measured using a LabScan Colorimeter before and after UV exposure. Results showed that gray hair tresses treated with Polyquaternium-59 sustain virtually no discoloration, as compared to those treated with Octinoate (OMC).
Data from another study on relaxed ethnic hair indicate that Polyquaternium-59 provides protective benefits similar to those in both pigmented and gray hair: prevention of Tryptophan damage, retention of surface properties, and preservation of tensile strength.
