Polyvinylcaprolactam is a nonionic, film-forming, hair-setting polymer typically used in aerosol sprays, pump sprays, and lotions. Depending on the setting effect, the formulation can contain 2 – 4.5 % polymer. It is miscible with ethanol, isopropanol, and mixtures of water and alcohol.
Thanks to its nonionic nature, Polyvinylcaprolactam needs no neutralization and is distributed as an ethanolic solution, a clear and almost colorless liquid with a very slight characteristic odor.
Polyvinylcaprolactam can be combined with a wide range of other setting polymers in almost any proportion. It possesses exceptionally good compatibility with propellants, mainly propane and butane. In countries where solvents are expensive, this brings cost savings.
Polyvinylcaprolactam also features excellent curl retention and gives a strong hold even in humid climates with very low tack. It can be used to produce hairspray formulations both with and without water.
