Corn starch is a vegetable polymer used for decades in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. In its regular unmodified form, corn starch does not always provide desired technical properties and can therefore undergo modification or derivatization that shapes it according to needs. Modifications can be divided into physical, with the use of heat, radiation, and shear, or chemical, enzymatic, and combined.

Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate is a modified, pre-gelatinized natural polymer that enables the formation of a cold gel with a light sensory profile, reduces shine, and provides good spreadability in skin and hair care applications. After modification, this derivative of corn starch meets the microbiological parameters of several pharmaceutical and cosmetic regulations, being suitable for use in children's products and products that come into contact with the eye area and mucous membranes.

In most personal care emulsions, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate can aid in emulsion stabilization, aesthetics enhancement, and viscosity build. An emulsion containing it will have outstanding stability over a broad temperature range (-30°C up to 50°C).

Thanks to good skin conditioning properties and cost-effectivity, Hydroxypropyl starch phosphate provides a body for formulation with a pleasant after-feel. It is dispersible in cold water, with no need for homogenization, and works well with oils enabling "one pot processing" and a cheaper final product.

Because of its nonionic character and broad compatibility, Hydroxypropyl starch phosphate is compatible with a wide range of ingredients and raw materials. In addition, it exhibits good foam-enhancing properties and is used in cleansing applications.
