Menthol is a compound obtained from peppermint oil or other mint oils or made synthetically. Menthol has local anesthetic and counterirritant qualities.

Pure menthol is a crystal that melts at about 45°C. It gives a cooling sensation to shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and creams. It is used as a stimulating cooling agent to improve circulation.
