Octocrylene (2-Ethylhexyl-2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl acrylate) is a pale yellow, clear to slightly cloudy, oily viscous liquid with a characteristic odor and refractive index of 1.561-1.571. It is useful as a sunscreen in sun care products (creams, lotions), baby sun care products, moisturizers for daily use, and decorative cosmetics.

Octocrylene is used as an oil-soluble photostable UV-B filter in sunscreen formulations in association with approved UV-A absorbers in everyday cosmetic preparations like creams and lotions. In addition, it offers additional absorption in the short-wave UV-A spectrum.

It is a useful ingredient for water-resistant formulations that facilitate the dissolution of other solid sunscreens like Avobenzone and Benzophenone-3. Octocrylene protects other photo-degradable sunscreens like Avonbenzone acting as an excellent SPF booster. It is an excellent solubilizer for crystalline UV absorbers and due to its outstanding photostability, it is used as a photostabilizer for e.g. Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane.

Easy to formulate, Octocrylene is miscible with methanol, propylene glycol, IPM, mineral, plant, and silicone oils. It is insoluble in water and is ideal for the formulation of water-resistant sunscreen products. This oil-soluble UV-B filter Octocrylene is approved worldwide (maximal concentration varies according to local legislation). It is safe for topical application but unsafe for ingestion and direct contact with the eyes.
