Oryzanol (γ-Oryzanol) is a white or off-white crystalline powder with a characteristic odor derived from rice bran. This ingredient is soluble in natural waxes and oils; practically soluble in chloroform and methyl ethyl ketone; slightly soluble in alcohol, n-hexane, n-heptane, and ether; insoluble in water.

Oryzanol stimulates the circulation of blood, protects the skin from wrinkles and freckles, and inhibits the oxidation of fat. It is soluble in fats and has good emulsifying properties.

Oryzanol has a high resistance against UV light, making it an excellent natural UV absorber. In combination with tocopherols or amino acids, it exhibits an excellent antioxidant effect. In combination with ascorbic acid, Oryzanol is very effective in skin bleaching. It is a useful ingredient for anti-aging and sun care applications. Usually, it is used in 0.5-5.0% concentrations.
