Propylene Carbonate is a clear polar solvent with high boiling and flash points. It has a low order of toxicity and a mild, ether-like odor. It is stable under storage and handling conditions and is not hygroscopic or corrosive.

Propylene Carbonate is particularly well-suited for a water-white product or high-purity application. It is used as a polar additive for montmorillonite or bentonite clay gallants, which are widely used as bases for deodorants, lipsticks, and mascaras. It is also used as a solvent in nail polish removers.

Propylene carbonate has a low degree of acute “systemic” toxicity. In subchronic dermal toxicity studies in rats, no adverse effects were seen beyond the site of application. In clinical studies, undiluted propylene carbonate caused moderate skin irritation, whereas 10% propylene carbonate in aqueous solutions produced no skin irritation or sensitization.
