Sorbitan Laurate is a partial monoester of natural lauric acid (a fatty acid with a 12-carbon backbone) and sorbitan (cyclic ether produced by the dehydration of the hexahydric alcohol - sorbitol). It is a mild nonionic vegetable-derived surfactant that has a wide range of advantages in comparison with ionic surfactants, including stability, flexibility, and compatibility.

Sorbitan laureate is a pale yellow liquid, that is the most hydrophilic ingredient in the sorbitan-fatty-acid esters range. It is soluble in many lipophilic bases and organic solvents. Thanks to its emulsifying properties (HLB value of 8.6), Sorbitan Laurate is used as a co-emulsifier in oil-in-water emulsions, often combined with Polysorbate 20 and other polysorbates.
