The gum of acacia is considered highly nutritious. During the gum harvest, the Moors of the desert are said to live almost entirely on it. It has been proven that 6 ounces is sufficient to support an adult for 24 hours.

Acacia gum has also been used to form protective, soothing coatings over inflamed sites of respiratory, digestive, and urinary tracts and to treat dysentery. In some countries, it is still used to coat pills and as an ingredient in medicinal syrups.

Acacia Senegal Gum Extract is a colorless to light yellow liquid with a characteristic odor. It is soluble in water at any proportion, and the pH range of the solution is 4.0 - 6.5 at 25 °C.

Acacia Senegal Gum Extract has been used topically in lotions as a soothing agent and an astringent. It is astringent, demulcent, and emollient. It is also used externally to cover inflamed surfaces such as burns, sore nipples, and nodular leprosy.

Acacia Senegal Gum Extract's soothing qualities make it useful in skin care lotions, creams, astringents, and bath products. The recommended use level is 5 - 10% in skin care products.
