The rare and wild white genepi (Artemisia umbelliformis Lam.), also called yellow genepi, is famous in the Alps and is very often described, next to Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum Cass.), as the other symbol of the Alps. The legend says that Artemis, the Greek goddess of wild nature, was given its botanical name Artemisia, an homage to the plant for its digesting properties and ability to treat menstruation problems.

Its numerous yellow flowers can be observed throughout the aerial part from June to September. A perennial belonging to the Asteraceae family, the white genepi is found on rocks, screens, or moraines at altitudes between 2000 and 3200m. It is a rare species that is cultivated in the Swiss Alps.

Traditional medicine

In traditional Alpine medicine, Artemisia umbelliformis was used to treat appetite loss and digestive spasms. It is also famous for its depurative properties.

The primary use of white genepi remains the preparation of alcoholic drinks found in the Alpine valleys. It contains sesquiterpene lactones with antispasmodic, bitter, and appetite-increasing action.

The essential oil of Artemisia umbelliformis has a significant anti-microbial effect and is additionally used for flavoring.
