Ginkgo biloba extract

Ginkgo biloba is the only deciduous tree in Ginkgoaceae as a symbol of vitality. It is an ascetically pleasing deciduous tree growing to approximately 30 meters in height. Since it has maintained the current feature, which is identical to the one in the Paleozoic period since its first appearance about 250 million years before passing through the crustal movements of 60 million years and many times of glacial periods, amazingly surviving the Ice Age, Ginkgo is often considered the symbol of vigorous vitality and longevity. In 1859 Charles Darwin referred to this Ancient tree as a “living fossil.” It is also unique in that it is dioecious, where male and female flowers grow on different trees.

In the ginkgo extracts obtained from the mature green leaves of Ginkgo biloba, a large number of bioactive substances are found. The major compounds of Ginkgo leaves are known as kaempferol and quercetin, which are flavonoid compounds, and bilobalide and ginkgolide A, B, C, D, M, and J, which are terpene compounds. Also, omega-3-fatty acids are included as minor compounds.

Fresh leaves or dried leaves, and fruits without crust are referred to as Ginkgo. Hands or machines harvest either cultivated ones or wild ones. Leaves are dried and pressed in a ball shape. The dried extracts from dried leaves are washed with acetone/water to become the final product. At this time, concentrates or separating additives are not used. In oriental medicine, fruits are Baekgwa, crust as Baekgwa Supi, and roots as Baekgwa Geun.

Ginkgo leaves extract has anti-oxidative, analgetic, and antihistamine properties. It promotes skin elasticity and firmness. The phytochemicals in the leaves of this plant improve dermal microcirculation and stimulate cell functions. In addition, the extract contains anti-inflammatory chemicals (reducing cycloxygenase-2) that soothe skin inflammation and irritation.
