Licorice is also known as Glycyrrhiza glabra is a perennial plant of the bean family, which roots are species that have been used centuries as herbal medicine and natural sweetener worldwide. Licorice root is an oriental traditional (Chance, Ayurveda, etc.) medicine used for the treatment of several diseases including skin disorders.

Many modern scientists investigate valuable pharmacological properties of Glycyrrhiza glabra and found that it has the following effects on the skin:

  • Antiaging (including estrogenic)
  • Melanin synthesis inhibiting
  • Anti-inflammatory,
  • Antiviral,
  • Antimicrobial,
  • Antioxidant,
  • Immunomodulatory.

Licorice root extract contains almost all vitamins C, E, B3, and B5 that skin needs. Flavonoids from the extract inhibit tyrosinase and suppress the synthesis of melanin pigment decreasing hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

It is also a potent antioxidant that scavengers 80% of free radicals protecting skin fibroblasts from oxidative stress and preserving firmness and elasticity. Thanks to the anti‐inflammatory action Glycyrrhiza glabra extract is effective for the treatment of skin conditions like eruptions, dermatitis, eczema, and pruritus.

Rich in biologically active Glabridin Licorice root extract protects keratinocyte's DNA from UV-induced damage and cell death recovering skin barrier function. It also promotes hair growth and is used in hair-care botanical formulations.
