Potassium Glycyrrhizinate (Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate) is the potassium salt of Glycyrrhizin (or glycyrrhizic acid) a component of Licorice root extract. It is a white to faintly yellow crystalline powder, odorless, with a specific sweet taste. This salt is an effective treatment for acute and chronic dermatitis proved by numerous clinical dermatological tests in Japan and worldwide. It is an “anti-inflammatory” active constituent in Quasi-Drug in Japan.

Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate has mild action and good efficiency, almost without adverse effects. Whos it is widely used in personal care preparations thanks to its chemical stability, good solubility, and additional emulsifying properties. It is exceptionally stable chemically, decomposed occurs if heated at over 100 degrees celsius for a long period of time.

One of the most important properties of Potassium Glycyrrhizinate in skincare preparation is the inhibition (antagonist) of hyaluronidase enzyme, with plays an important role in decreasing hyaluronic acid levels in the skin, but also leaves anti-inflammatory and antiallergic effects. Activating during inflammation, this enzyme plays a role in the destruction of the connective tissue matrix and increases the permeability of blood vessels and inflammatory cell migration.

Hyaluronidase present in mast cells is activated by the binding of the IgE-antigen complex to receptors and is involved in the release of histamine granules. So far anti-inflammatory agents such as indomethacin and antiallergic agents such as sodium cromoglicate have been reported as inhibitors of hyaluronidase - the same mechanism of action as Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate. Clinical tests showed that it was 11 times stronger than indomethacin and 3 times greater than sodium cromoglicate used as positive controls.

Increasing hyaluronic acid levels, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizinate improves the moisture-binding ability of the skin, exposing a smoother surface, and improving elasticity and volume. It eliminates irritation, redness, and edema, revealing a healthy appearance.
