Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is an herbaceous weed with a long history of culinary and medicinal use in various cultural groups throughout Europe, Asia, and South America. The succulent herb can be found growing in many cold climate areas (e.g. Canada) as well as warm areas (e.g. the Caribbean).

Recognized as ‘Ma Chi Xian’ in Traditional Chinese Medicine, purslane is often indicated for wound healing, skin ailments, and dysentery. Portulaca oleracea contains loads of biologically active compounds and is a source of many nutrients. Some of the biologically active substances in purslane include omega-3 fatty acids (mainly alpha-linolenic acid), alkaloids, flavonoids, vitamins (especially vitamin A, vitamin C, some vitamin B, and carotenoids), and minerals (magnesium, calcium, potassium, and iron).

Purslane extract is found especially helpful in blood sugar metabolism, as it is treasured by the Near Eastern (and also South American) folk medicine for its anti-diabetic properties. Research showed that purslane extract works through the triple mode of action: The remarkable benefits of P. oleracea extract in the reduction of blood glucose levels were evidenced in various clinical trials. Preliminary data showed that purslane herb extract is able to normalize blood glucose in individuals with elevated levels.

In skin care applications Portulaca oleracea extract is used for its anti-histaminic, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. Thanks to its high antioxidant content, Purslane extract protects skin cells from UV-induced free radicals and oxidative stress, thus, is incorporated in many sun care and after-sun products. it is considered safe and well-tolerated and may be considered a complementary therapy for erysipelas, itches, and eczema.

Portulaca oleracea extract contains compounds with antiseptic properties effective against bacteria, yeast, and some viruses. It is used in preparations against acne, dandruff, and other skin infections. In addition, it enhances the local immune system preventing re-infections.
