Rhus Semialata is one of two distinct varieties of Rhus chinensis (Chinese sumac), a shrubby tree growing in East and South Asia. A parasitic insect Chinese aphid (Schlechtendalia chinensis) living on the leaves of Rhus semialata causes a specific gall called Galla chinensis (Galla rhois), widely used in Chinese medicine.
According to traditional Chinese medicine references, Rhus Semialata Gall and preparations based on it are effective against respiratory and intestinal infections, bleeding, and inflammation. Modern scientific studies confirmed Galla chinensis's antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Rhus Semialata Gall Extract is rich in gallotannins, tannins that can easily be hydrolyzed and biologically active. Gallotannin molecules contain a central glucose core with attached gallic acid units through depside bonding. It also contains phenolic compounds (antioxidants), free gallic acid, and methyl gallate (antiseptics).
Incorporated in skin care applications, Rhus Semialata Gall Extract fights against harmful bacteria, oxidative stress, and inflammation, revealing a healthy, youthful, and calm appearance. In addition, it has potent antiviral properties and is effective against herpes. Thanks to its fisetin and pentagalloylglucose content, Rhus Semialata Gall Extract soothes irritated skin and prevents allergic reactions and itching triggered by human mast cells. In oral care products (especially when combined with fluorides), Rhus Semialata Gall Extract promotes dental enamel remineralization and tooth health.
