Cocotrimonium Methosulfate is Lauryl/myristyl trimethylammonium methosulfate, a cationic quaternary ammonium salt used as an emulsifier, hair conditioner, and solubilizer. Its 30% solution is colorless, slightly yellowish, and has a faint, characteristic odor. It is known under the trade name Luviquat® Mono LS.

Cocotrimonium Methosulfate is miscible with water and ethanol. In many cases, its solubilizing properties are also sufficient to solubilize the fragrance in a formulation. In addition, it can be used as a foam stabilizer.

Cocotrimonium Methosulfate provides excellent hair conditioning effects, such as improved hair comb-through and prevention of split ends. These properties are best demonstrated when used in hair conditioners, treatments, mousses, and shampoos. It leaves no visible film on the hair even after repeated applications.

In addition, Cocotrimonium Methosulfate has an aesthetically pleasing skin feel, making it useful in skin care products as an emulsifier and solubilizer. Its solubilizing properties are sufficient in many formulations to solubilize the fragrance oil. In contrast with other mono-quaternary substances, it is chloride-free and has good stability at lower temperatures.

Cocotrimonium Methosulfate has been toxicologically assessed for its suitability in cosmetic preparations. Based on the information at our disposal, and provided that the recommended concentrations and fields of application are adhered to, there is no evidence of any toxicological risks associated with its use.
