Vegetable proteins may be extracted, solubilized, purified, and supplied as light-colored, good clarity, low ash solutions. They help to overcome the present controversy regarding animal-derived proteins and problems of religious dietary requirements in other parts of the world and will lend themselves to the production of natural cosmetics.

Hydrolyzed corn protein is a biofunctional extract of corn (Zea mays) that boosts hair regeneration, adhesion, communication, and elongation. It is used in hair serums and treatments, scalp treatments, and conditioners. It offers all the benefits of traditional animal-derived proteins when utilized in cosmetic formulations and products, and also participates in foam production and stabilization.

Zein is the chief protein found in corn. This prolamine is soluble in aqueous-alcohol systems. On extraction, a completely water-soluble product is obtained. Hydrolyzed Corn Protein differs from other vegetable proteins in that it does not contain tryptophan in its amino acid profile.

Studies showed that hydrolyzed corn protein enhances the in vitro expression of proteins related to the improvement of communication and cell signaling such as laminin-5, β1 integrin, and fibronectin. It boosts the in vitro expression of proteins involved in the maintenance of the active cell cycle (p63, ki67, and phosphohistone 3).

In addition, hydrolyzed corn protein boosts hair growth, tested on (in vitro) living hair models. It is a safe, natural, and effective ingredient for hair care applications, typically used in 0.5-1.0% concentrations.
