Collagen is a major structural protein forming vast resilient sheets that support the skin and softer tissues. Collagen is significant in retaining the youthfulness and elasticity of the skin.
Procollagen is an active aqueous solution of fish-derived collagen from swim bladders. The amino acid profile is different than traditional animal-derived collagen; the main difference being reduced levels of proline, hydroxyproline, and acidic amino acids.
Correspondingly, there is an increased level of amino acids with basic side chain groups. Unlike animal-derived gelatins of similar molecular weight, solutions of Procollagen will not gel, but they will dry to form a flexible film.
Positively charged proteins can be used to enhance substantivity. The increased level of basic amino acids in Procollagen will improve the overall substantivity of the product. Therefore, Procollagen finds utility in skin and hair care products which have traditionally incorporated animal-derived proteins.Functions
