The wholesome properties of yogurt have been enjoyed around the world for at least 4,000 years. People on every continent continue to savor yogurt for the long-lasting health benefits associated with this highly nutritious dairy product. Yoghurt’s benefits come from a combination of the quality of its nutrients and from properties related to the live cultures, specifically Lactobacillus bulgaris.

The benefits of this highly regarded nutritional product are utilized in ingredient for cosmetic applications in the form of Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment. It is produced by fermenting Lactobacillus bulgaris at 25ºC in a specific skim milk-based nutrient system. The yogurt cultures metabolize the essential elements found in the milk, which include magnesium, zinc, calcium, and phosphorus.

Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment is a sterile powder easily dispersed into either water or an emulsion. Incorporated in cosmetic formulations, it provides excellent moisturizing benefits coupled with skin smoothing benefits to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment consists of milk glycoproteins, carbohydrates, and essential elements. The proteins act as a carrier to deliver these elements (magnesium, zinc, calcium, and phosphorus) down into the top layers of the stratum corneum to promote the revitalization of the skin. Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment supplies the key cofactors associated with normal, healthy skin ensuring that dermal enzymes can work more efficiently.

Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment is made from only food-grade material and cultures (GRAS in the USA). Milk, milk proteins, yogurts, and their cultures have traditionally been applied to the skin for their moisturizing qualities. The CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) has reviewed the use of cosmetic proteins and found them to be safe.

The glycoproteins present in Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment have excellent film-forming properties on the skin, helping to enhance the moisture content and protecting it from hostile environmental hazards (i.e. – pollution, cigarette smoke, etc.) while nurturing a healthy appearance.

Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc Ferment forms dispersions in aqueous solutions as the proteins are not hydrolyzed and consequently not soluble in water.

It is recommended that, as with other biological actives, the Lactobacillus/Milk/Calcium/Phosphorus/Magnesium/Zinc is added to an emulsion at the end of processing at temperatures below 50ºC. Due to its complex structure, this material may have weak emulsifying properties, affecting the activity of traditional emulsifiers.
