Oleic acid is a naturally occurring fatty acid commonly found in vegetable and animal fats. Oleic acid is an 18-carbon fatty acid with one double bond at the omega 9 (w-9) position, also referred to as C18:1n-9 and (Z)-9-Octadecenoic acid, with an empirical formula of C18H34O2. It is a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid.

The raw material source for Oleic acid used in high-end skincare products is exclusively renewable, plant-derived, and non-animal. This is designed to help meet the customers' needs and increase regulatory acceptance of final formulations.

Oleic acid does not exist alone in nature. Oleic acid ingredients include other naturally occurring fatty acids, such as stearic and palmitic, which are saturated. In addition, unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic are also present.

Usually, refined ingredients contain 80 to 88% oleic acid with other related fatty acids comprising the remaining balance with low peroxide value. It is a clear, colorless to pale yellow, practically odorless, oily liquid. It is a safe food-grade ingredient permitted for direct addition to food for human consumption and use in pharmaceuticals.

Oleic acid is used as an emulsifying and solubilizing agent, defoamer, emollient, and absorption enhancer in skin and hair care applications. It can be a vehicle or a component of self-emulsifying delivery systems.
