Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate is an ester of capric fatty acid with polyglycerol containing three glyceryl units. It is a PEG-free, biodegradable, and water-soluble surfactant, that enables clear final products. Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate is used in shampoos, body washes, shower gels, hand washes, and baby washes.

The most interesting aspect of this emollient is that it is multi-functional, making it a cost-effective formulation. The Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate was tested along with several other emollients and finished as one of the best performers. Areas that tested well included:

  • Skin Feel Improving,
  • Skin Smoothing,
  • Improvement of Barrier Function,
  • Thickening,
  • Foam Enhancing,
  • Mitigating.

In comparison with coco fatty acid ethanol amides incorporated in shampoos or shower gels, Polyglyceryl-3 Caprate also increases viscosity with an efficacy profile, but without their disadvantages. Even more importantly, it exhibited an improvement in barrier function as determined by TEWL (Trans Epidermal Water Loss) has been demonstrated.
