Hexapeptide-2 is a synthetic peptide with sequence His-Trp-Ala-Trp-Phe-Lys, a competitor (antagonist) of endogenous α-MSH (peptide; alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone) that promotes melanin pigment production and skin pigmentation. So, it acts as a skin-whitening agent, blocking receptors for α-MSH on melanocytes and reducing melanin synthesis and transfer to keratinocytes. Hexapeptide-2 is also known as the trading name Dermostatyl™ IS (Ashland).

Hexapeptide-2 is structurally similar to α-MSH and can partially bind to the hormone receptor. When the receptor is blocked, the melanocyte is inactive and α-MSH can not bind to the occupied receptor site.

Lessening melanin production and distribution to keratinocytes, Hexapeptide-2 brightens the skin, fights against dark spots and hyperpigmentation, and evens out the tone. In addition, it reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Hexapeptide-2 is a safe and useful ingredient for after-sun, skin whitening, and anti-aging skincare applications.
