sh-Polypeptide-4 is a synthetic analog of human SCF (Stem cell factor), a peptide of 164 amino acids. It is a cytokine that controls the survival, growth, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells.

SCF affects the healing system concerning the repair of cells and tissue by activating hematopoietic precursor cells. Besides, its expression has also been detected in human keratinocytes in the skin. Moreover, the Stem cell factor is expressed along the migratory routes of melanocytes allowing a cell to deploy to proper developmental sites.
