Metallic silver (Argentum metallicum) is a natural antimicrobial active and appears as a silver-grey homogenous powder, without odor. It can be marked with Color Index nomenclature as a pigment or colorant CI 77820.

Silver (and some of its salts) has been a known antiseptic for centuries, and incorporated in personal care preparations it acts as a long-term antibacterial and antimicrobial agent. It does not pose any threat to the environment in cosmetic concentrations.

It is produced in a specially developed manufacturing plant through a wholly physical gas phase process, which facilitates the use of pure metallic silver with no ionic impurities. This manufacturing technology is unique and is exclusively available for cosmetic use.

Acting as a source for Ag+ ions, silver is highly active against a broad spectrum of germs/microbes and prevents infections, killing irritant bacteria, normalizing the skin flora, and keeping a healthy bacterial balance. It impairs inflammation caused by pathogenic germs and disrupts the multiplication of harmful microorganisms.

Silver is an ideal ingredient for the combination with other skin healers such as panthenol and zinc. Even at a low dosage (0,1%) it is highly effective and free of side effects.
