In traditional medicine, Hyssopus officinalis has the properties of a cleanser, both in and out of the body. The leaves hold an antiseptic and antiviral oil, and their leaves possess the same kind of fungus that produces penicillin.

Hyssopus officinalis extract is known to help liquids leave body tissues and has been used to heal respiratory illnesses, ear infections, bronchitis, and stomach problems. Hyssop leaves can be used as compresses on wounds and bruises.

Dried Hyssopus Officinalis can be brewed as a tea and used for coughs and to help one relax. Hyssopus officinalis extract was once used as a remedy for rheumatism.

Incorporated in skin care applications, Hyssopus officinalis extract leaves antibacterial (antiseptic), anti-inflammatory (lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase inhibitor), and antioxidant effects and is used in 1-3 % concentrations. Thanks to protecting and cleansing properties, it is used in all types of cleaning formulations (shower and bath formulations and shampoos) and daycare products, especially for acne-prone and sensitive skin types.
