Ceteareth-12 is a polyoxyethylene-12 cetostearyl ether, a mixture of ethers cetyl and stearyl alcohols with polyethylene glycol (approximately 12 units long). It is a white waxy semisolid, usually in pieces, with a slight odor.

Ceteareth-12 is dispersible in hot water or ethanol. Its solidification point is about 34-37ºC.

In personal care applications, Ceteareth-12 is a non-ionic universal emulsifier with an HLB value of 13.5. It is widely used in the preparation of topical oil-in-water cosmetic emulsions. It is practically a safe ingredient, but at high doses, it can irritate the skin and eyes.

Ceteareth-12 is incompatible with iodides, phenolic substances (including parabens, which reduce antimicrobial effectiveness), salicylates, sulfonamides, tannins, benzocaine, tretinoin, and various oxidizers.
