Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate

Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate is a polymeric ester that is a soft, buttery solid with no odor and a low melting point. It provides skin conditioning, emollient action, and cushion to the skin.

One of the best qualities of lanolin is its ability to hold water and give shine to skin and hair due to its high refractive index. However, late research has shown lanolin to be a primary skin sensitizer. This, in conjunction with the industry’s move toward non-animal-derived ingredients, has led to the development of non-animal lanolin replacements.

Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate is a synthetic replacement for isopropyl lanolate. It is a novel, high molecular weight polymeric ester, and falls under the polymer exemption for EINECS classification. The low melt point of Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate gives formulas a sensorial melting when applied to the skin. This is ideal when formulating hot pour formulations like lipsticks or pan makeups. Incorporated into skin care applications, this ingredient gives a luxurious feel to lotions or creams, as the formula appears to melt on the skin, truly feeling like butter when rubbed out.

Traditional lipstick formulations were made by comparing a formula containing Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate and a control. Stick hardness was evaluated by a penetration test, which was measured with a Universal Penetrometer. A penetration test evaluates the overall strength of a lipstick, yielding a value in mm of the distance the device is able to penetrate into the stick. The larger the resulting value, the deeper the penetration, and the softer the resulting stick is.

The formulation containing the Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate gave the greatest penetration, indicative of a softer, creamier stick, with good payoff and slip. High-temperature stability testing showed that the formula containing 5% Stearyl/PPG-3 Myristyl Ether Dimer Dilinoleate was stable, with no drooping of the stick observed.
