Hydrolyzed Keratin

Keratin is made up of fibrous proteins rich in sulfur-containing amino acids, an essential component present in skin, hair, and nails. Hydrolyzed keratin is a mix of peptides and amino acids obtained from the controlled bio- or chemical hydrolysis of proteins from natural origin.

Hydrolyzed keratin is a protein hydrolysate, carefully monitored during manufacture to achieve the lowest possible odor and ash content. This active ingredient promotes resistance to the action of polar solvents, through its high content of disulfide bonds and the large amount of hydrophobic amino acids. It is frequently used in hair care and is particularly useful for treating and protecting hair that has been damaged due to perming and bleaching.

Hydrolyzed keratin is a water-soluble ingredient, derived from sheep’s wool. It forms a moisture-retentive film providing a protective colloid effect that seals and repairs the surface of the skin and hair.

Incorporated in surfactant systems, Hydrolyzed keratin helps to stabilize the foam due to its substantivity, and in hair care cleansing products improves the shine and manageability of the hair. It contains short peptides (10-20) and essential amino acids that can be assimilated on the scalp and by the NMF on the skin, contributing to the overall moisturization, by helping to combat dryness.

Thanks to the similarities in their functional characteristics, Hydrolyzed keratin and other soluble keratins are substantive to the hair, nails, and skin. They help to repair surface damage, enhance the surface moisture content, coat the hair and skin smoothly and their moisture-retentive films will provide shine to the substrate.
