Moringa oil (Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil), also known as Behen oil, has been well known since ancient times and was traditionally used in medicine, for beauty care, and in the preparation of religious ointments. It has also been used as a lubricant by watchmakers. Its use in commercial cosmetics is recent, but promising.
This oil was prized by Egyptians because of its very good oxidative stability. In recent tests (Rancimat) Moringa oil resisted oxidation at 100°C for > 80 hours. Vases having contained this oil have been found in the tombs of the new Empire.
Its composition is similar to that of olive oil, with a very high content of oleic acid (72.50%). It also contains palmitic acid (6.2%), stearic acid (5.3%) arachidic acid (3.4%), eicosenoic acid (2.3%), and also behenic acid (5.7%) from which it derives its name, “Behen oil”.
Moringa Oleifera seed oil is well-suited for use in cosmetics. It has a mild odor and a light emollient feel on the skin. Its spreading coefficient on the skin is similar to other “dry” emollients currently favored in a wide variety of skincare products.
