Benzophenone-3 forms the backbone of sunscreens and sun protectants used in creams, lotions, and bases. It provides UV-B absorption and more importantly, it also provides some absorption in the short UV-A II region (320-340 nm).
Incorporated in sun care applications, Benzophenone-3 acts as an oil-soluble sunscreen. Being a broad-band UV filter, it can be used in day creams to prevent premature aging of skin and it also protects the lips.
In hair care products Benzophenone-3 prevents brittleness and protects bleached hair from the effect of UV radiation. It is used in hair gels, shampoos, hair-setting lotions, mousses, and hair sprays.
Benzophenone-3 can also protect other ingredients preventing color fading of formulations in transparent packaging. However, the effectiveness depends on the type of colorant and the medium in which it is used. In addition, it improves the stability of fragrance oils and protects active constituents against oxidation.Synonyms
