Benzophenone-3 forms the backbone of sunscreens and sun protectants used in creams, lotions, and bases. It provides UV-B absorption and, more importantly, some absorption in the short UV-A II region (320-340 nm). It is a white-to-yellowish, cream-colored powder soluble in the usual cosmetic oils.

Incorporated in sun care applications, Benzophenone-3 acts as an oil-soluble sunscreen. As a broad-band UV filter, it can be used in day creams to prevent premature skin aging and protect the lips.

Benzophenone-3 is a preservative used in hair care products, including gels, shampoos, hair-setting lotions, mousses, and sprays. It prevents brittleness and protects bleached hair from UV radiation.

Benzophenone-3 can also protect other ingredients, preventing color fading of formulations in transparent packaging. However, the effectiveness depends on the type of colorant and the medium in which it is used. In addition, it improves the stability of fragrance oils and protects active constituents against oxidation.

Benzophenone-3 has been toxicologically assessed for its suitability in cosmetic preparations. The information provided shows that the recommended concentrations and fields of application are adhered to, and there is no evidence of any toxicological risks associated with its use.
