Benzophenone-9 (2,2'-Dihydroxy-4,4'-dimethoxybenzophenone-5,5'-disodium sulfonate) is a benzophenone derivative, a yellow crystalline powder, a UV absorber and stabilizer used in lotions, creams, and hair sun care applications. It is soluble in water and suitable for aqueous formulations.

Benzophenone-9 protects active ingredients, unstable pigments, and fragrances from UV-induced decomposition, especially in transparent packaging. It is a UVA and UVB absorber used to protect the color of many formulations and applies to a wide range of pigments. However, it is not an FDA Category I sunscreen active and can not be utilized for over-the-counter sun care applications.

The information available on Benzophenone-9 does not indicate any risk of toxicity if the applications and the concentrations used are as recommended.
