DMDM Hydantoin or Dimethylol dimethyl Hydantoin (DMDMH) is a derivative of formaldehyde and dimethyl hydantoin. It was designed as an odorless alternative to formaldehyde for permanent-pressed fabrics. Later, formulators started to incorporate it in personal care applications as a formaldehyde-releasing preservative.

DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative for use in aqueous-based personal care products with action against bacteria. It is used as an ant-microbial and for the preservation of products such as shampoos, hand soaps, face creams, sunscreen, lotions, bubble baths, and wipes at typical use levels from 0.20 - 0.60%.
