Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate is a light yellow to beige crystalline powder, a highly effective fungicide preservative for cosmetics and personal care products. It has unique properties and is cost-effective. Even at a low concentration, Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate provides a high level of antimicrobial activity to inhibit the growth of yeasts and molds.

Features

  • Highly effective fungicide
  • It’s far more effective against fungi compared to parabens,
  • Stable within a wide range of pH
  • It is cost-effective.

Safety

Compared to the traditional anti-fungicide used in personal care, Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate has been demonstrated to be safer and milder, even for sensitive skin.

The typical application concentration of Iodopropynyl butylcarbamate is max. 0.05 % used in hair care products (shampoo, conditioners, rinses), creams, lotions, suntan products, shaving products (shaving foam, gel, lotions, and creams), eye make-up, powder products, liquid soaps, surfactants, thickeners.

Ingredient products

Spectrum of activity

The use of Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate is based on the broad fungicidal effect of its active ingredient which is particularly effective against the following mold fungi and yeast: Aspergillus niger, Penicillium brevicaule, Chaetomium globosum, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

In addition, a pronounced effectiveness against a large number of bacteria can be observed but not at the same level as the fungicidal effect. To achieve cost-efficient and effective preservation it is worth combining the product with established cosmetics preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, benzyl alcohol, parabens, or bronopol (please observe the current patent situation of bronopol).

Registration / Approval / Recommendation

3-iodo-2-propynylbutylcarbamate is approved as a preservative for cosmetics in a maximum permissible concentration of 0.05 % (see EC Directive 76/768/EEC and adaptations). It may not be used as an agent for oral hygiene or lip care products and cosmetics. If the concentration in products intended for retention on the skin (leave-on cosmetics) is more than 0.02 %, the note "contains iodine" must be added.
