Tetrahydroxypropyl Ethylenediamine is a derivative of Ethylenediamine in which all hydrogens connected with nitrogens are replaced with four 2-hydroxypropyl groups. It is a clear, viscous, almost odorless liquid, particularly suited as a neutralizing agent for polymers in clear gel formulations. It forms clear solutions with solvents like water, ethanol, isopropanol, and propylene glycol.
The gels formulated with Tetrahydroxypropyl Ethylenediamine have excellent alcohol compatibility and a pleasant, non-tacky skin feeling. The cosmetic industry also uses it in soap-making, stearate creams, and to neutralize sunscreens that contain acid groups.
It could be proved that Tetrahydroxypropyl Ethylenediamine shows a considerably lower tendency to form nitroamines than other bases containing amines.
Tetrahydroxypropyl Ethylenediamine has been toxicologically tested for cosmetic use. Within the recommended applications and concentrations, no indications of toxicological risks were found.
