PEG-6 is a polyethylene glycol (with six ethylene glycol units) that is a clear, colorless liquid, almost tasteless, and odorless pharmacological-grade ingredient. It has good solvent power for numerous substances that are sparingly soluble in water and is mainly used as a solvent in the production of liquid preparations.

The excellent solvent power can be ascribed to the forming of a complex between PEG-6 and the active substance. Some of these complexes are loose and reversible; others have been inactivated by the active substance, like in pharmacological preparations, e.g., Penicillin G and Bacitracine. Consequently, the influence of the polyethylene glycols on the efficiency and the absorbability of the active substances used should be tested in individual cases.

PEG-6 can be used as a carrier for active substances, solubilizers, and absorption improvers for substances that are insoluble or sparingly soluble in water, e.g., steroids and fat-soluble vitamins. It exhibits very little acute toxicity and good compatibility with the skin.

PEG-6 functions are to impart consistency and solubility, carriers, lubricants, heat stabilizers, and fixatives, and it is used in the manufacture of toothpaste, lipsticks, shaving creams, powders, nail care products, and decorative cosmetics. Its use in soap manufacture should be emphasized, and it is particularly estimated to be a milling agent, fixative, and for the prevention of cracks.
