Poloxamer 407 is a polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene block polymer used in the cosmetic industry as a thickener and gelling agent due to its low skin and eye irritation. The mass fraction of polyoxyethylene is ca. 73 %. It is known under the trade name Lutrol® F 127.

Poloxamer 407 is a coarse, white, almost odorless, and tasteless powder with a waxy consistency. It is soluble in water and insoluble in diethyl ether, paraffins, and other oils.

Poloxamer 407 is used as a solubilizer and emulsifier ( HLB is in the range of 18 to 23) in various areas, from cosmetics to oral care products. At concentrations of about 20% in water, it forms stable, clear, ringing gels in which a wide variety of ingredients can be incorporated.

It can also be used as a co-emulsifier or bodying agent in creams and liquid emulsions. Another application of Poloxamer 407 is as a solubilizer for specific active ingredients and essential oils in cosmetic formulations.
