Erythrulose is a unique four-carbon ketone sugar (ketotetrose) produced via biotechnology. Its aqueous solution is a clear, yellow, highly viscous liquid.
In combination with DHA in sunless tanning products, Erythrulose has been shown to provide a longer-lasting and more natural-looking tan than DHA alone with an attractive sun-bronzed color. In addition, it reduces the dryness commonly seen in DHA-based products.
Without DHA, Erythrulose induces progressive skin streakless pigmentation, prolongs the natural tan, and leaves the skin less dry than DHA. It is used in cosmetics for "healthy-looking" skin.
